PURE STEAM - Ironclad Maritime Warship by 47ness PURE STEAM - Ironclad Maritime Warship by 47ness
More vehicle commission work for Pure Steam...! The beta is out, btw! Check the link for additional info. :D

This one went through countless revisions to try and make it more worthy of the game. Like most of my previous vehicles, this one began as a Sketchup model, but I experimented with doing it all digital. Dunno if I'll do it again; has its benefits but also takes much longer.

Process:

O, whups; and I guess this is my first upload of the new year/my 10th anniversary. Sorry it wasn't something more ...significant? P

Whoa.

I find my eyes being drawn to all the different shapes on the ship -- the cylinders and the slopes and the vase-like... chimneys? Guess who sucks at nautical terms XD;;;

I wouldn't want to be on the opposite side, that's for sure. Brilliant design!

Artistically I understand it. But really is a giant saw blade dead weight when you have guns?
Great pic though.

Saves on ammunition sometimes. :D

Nope. With the four chainsaws taken out there would be vastly more room for fuel and ammunition. The saws would affect stability and maneuverability. They would make it far less likely that the ship guns would hit it and far more likely it would get hit. You would only get close to a ship out of ammunition itself. Then they would be helpless and you would have not need to attack them with a chain saw.

Like the World War One side sponsons on tanks, they seem to be a good idea, look cool, and don't work.
And may I repeat. They do LOOK cool. so I'll just take my practical ass outta here.

Hey, I'm B'omarr Punk, the jag that commissioned this piece for my steampunk RPG, Pure Steam. We wanted gears/saws/grinders on such a ship because there are submersive creatures and craft which can sneak up from the depths. In those instances, cannons don't help much.

Depth charges. There have been instances were submarines have used saws and drills in actual combat. This was only until someone figured out a way to shoot a gun under water. Don't bring a knife to a gun fight.
I'm sorry I have to push my annoying nerd glasses all the way up my face. The chainsaws would add unnecessary weight, limit capacity to hold, fuel and ammunition, decrease maneuverability and weaken the haul.
Still looks cool. I'm going to go away now. :-)

Love the chain blades on the sides. Though I'd think from a practical standpoint they'd be far more effective if they were under the waterline.

I now have this idea of rotary flails in a vertical orientation, hitting nearby ships from the below, flinging small ones completely into the air.

Hmm maybe? It'd be like a caterpillar drive, but the water currents help propel the chainsaw? ;)
I decided to keep the blades above the waterline so it'd be more visible, really. That and they can still be used to carve open a hull and allow for boarding rather than outright sinking.

Well, that could get ugly. :ohnoes:

I was thinking more of sinking the ships. No point in boarding technically inferior ships. One of the things I like about steampunk, you CAN have a wide technological gap so you can have some faction having a god complex :D

How dreary. :0

I would think some crews would be more obliged to follow real-world maritime traditions of showing their enemy mercy if the other ship surrenders their goods. Not just crazy technology, but mannerisms and practices of the Victorian era are also a staple of steampunk. :nod:

And if nothing else, sea-faring folks are notoriously superstition, what with being at the mercy of the true sea gods. ;

Well, I could see a nation-state achieving overwhelming technological superiority due to a single genius and if the said genius was also the leader he'd be quite likely to dismiss all other technology as being inferior and unworthy of attention. And from that you can push it to god complex.

Clockwork ironclad! 1 caprain, 0 crew :D

See, now that kind of ship would require a much eviler design altogether. :devilish:

The 1-crew ship idea always makes me think of how sometimes on Star Trek a single person + computer will fly the entire starship and perform some perilous feat. And you can't help but laugh at why they bothered with hundreds of crewmen (who're only there to get killed when there's danger) :XD:

The crew is there to soak up the hits, do maintenance and brew coffee (everyone knows computers couldn't make a decent cup of coffee even if their core voltage depended on it).

Very stylish- the dual stacked main guns add a really interesting style and feel to the overall form of the ship. Another neat touch is the almost vase-like stacks at the top of the ship. I like the planking and armor on this pic- I know how frustrating getting the alignment right on it, so kudos for the great work.

To be honest, it makes me want to try my hand at a bit of ship design.

I'm sure the logistics of dual-stack turrets would be complicated, but it's crewed by a bunch of crazy dwarves so anything goes. :XD:

The vase-stacks are a callback to an earlier Pure Steam™ design, so yeah, good of you to notice. ^~
